QUAINTON EMAIL LETTER 29.09.2017

STEAM GALA - SUNDAY 1st OCTOBER

Trustee Colin Ashman put this in the QRS Members only section of Facebook this morning:

"Yesterday was spent shunting the Up Yard with Adrian Aylward and Vickie Aylward ready for this Sunday's Gala.

We still need another steam driver and a relief Guard to ensure the day runs smoothly.

If you are available, please contact the office."

Adrian tells me that we are steaming 5 steam locomotives - you will have to come over to see which ones..!

Please call the Office on 01296 655 720 if you can help with the crewing. Thank you.

ARTHUR'S REBUILD STARTS!

Regular visitors to the Down Yard will be aware that our 16 inch Hunslet, Arthur, of 1953 has been extremely thoroughly stripped down. The frames are on workshop trolley wheels awaiting shot blasting next week for which an area has been created between the buildings. The boiler (under the yellow A frame) has had its smokebox and front tube plate removed ready for a new tube plate - the white paint marks are the result of ultrasonic testing to determine metal thickness and wasting. The wheels are outside awaiting their turn. The horn guides are going through the machine shop having their faces ground to remove the rust pitting caused by years of inactivity.

Yesterday, a new frame stretcher was delivered by a local contractor which marks the start of Arthur's rebuild as a Thomas look a like.

COULD YOU GIVE A LIFT, PLEASE?

Chris Shen, a new member, is looking for a lift, please. Chris lives in the Tring area and can get to Aylesbury by bus but the buses to Quainton are infrequent at best... Chris is training as one of our Guards but doesn't drive and so needs a lift on Wednesdays and the odd weekend. He can meet in Exchange Street or by the old Royal Bucks Hospital.

Chris can be contacted by email or by mobile by contacting the office, (01296 655720), for these details but he asks that you text initially, please, in case he is in a meeting.

PIXIE COORDINATOR

A vacancy has arisen for a Coordinator of Pixies.

The role is relatively straight forward with a definite and finite end to it (Christmas Eve) and it can bring pleasure and job satisfaction in bucket fulls.

The principle task is to recruit a number of local boys & girls to act as assistants (pixies) to our Santa as he visits every child on the train. Over the years most of our pixies have come from Quainton village and work very happily, in pairs, dragging the sacks of gifts up and down the train. In reality most children from the year before are only too eager to do it again until they suddenly reach that magic age when it is no longer "cool", usually around 13 or 14 though it can be 16. You need to create a Roster and be on hand each day (or have a deputy who can) to ensure they turn up for duty, on time, know where the loos are, what they are doing, etc. You also need to be around during the day in case of sudden sickness (it has happened) and to monitor their progress.

The previous encumbent has created a file of information and past records to assist you and is still around to offer guidance and advice as needed but wont breathe down your neck!

Anyone with an interest is asked to contact the admin Office, in the first instance, on 01296 655 720 to discuss it further. Ask for Sarah

PRESS DATE

Heads of Department and others that may need to know are reminded that the press date deadline for our glossy house journal, Quainton News, is 30th September - that's tomorrow!
